Chronic pain? no - They will need more and more and it could lead to other problems

Only when one has an inflammatory episode which is too painful to bear.
The best treatment by far is to have regular check-ups with an orthopaedic specialist as he will have the latest available methods (which are improving all the time) to help with pain relief - perhaps a spinal block, nerve ablation etc.
In between visits to the orthopod, it's important to keep the spine flexible (the back loves exercise!) and in order to help with this, see a physiotherapist who will know exactly how to break up painful spasms, use deep heat and even laser therapy. The physiotherapist in conjunction with your physician will be able to advise which exercises are best for your back.
