how long does it take for meds (Rimadyl & Tramadol) to work on dogs with severe arthritis?my 8 year old golden retriever has been showing small signs of hip problems for a few months, but it was never really bad. a week ago today, i took her to the groomers, and it got really bad really fast. i think her legs must have been yanked/pulled during the haircut since thursday, she has not been able to get up on her back legs or walk. i took her to a vet on thursday, and she was put on Tramadol and Rimadyl. her xrays showed only very slight arthritis and the vet thought the medicine should pick her right back up. by saturday, she had no signs of improvement at all, so i took her back to the vet. they added Gabapentin. today, sunday, she still isn't showing ANY signs of improvement, and when i try to help her up on her hind legs, she growls quite fiercely at me - something she has NEVER done before. she's always a VERY friendly golden with no behavioral problems.

i should mention that she has also had a heart murmur her whole life, and she has been on Sotalol and Benzepril for awhile now, which has helped her quite a lot with that issue.

so, now i wonder - does it just take a while for the arthritis medicines set in and work when it's this bad? or could it be something else entirely?

When our dog was put on Rimadyl (4 years ago) it worked immediately. She has severe Hip Dysplasia AND Arthritis really bad.

Rimadyl kills dogs. Stop giving it to her. Try some alternative remedies instead.
