Which are the most soundable theories about auto-immune diseases?Systemic autoimmune diseases such as lupus, arthritis, guillian-barre and the localized type (those where only a single organ or tissue) such as Autoimmune hepatitis, temporal arteritis or addisons disease.

The best theories I have heard comprise a susceptible individual, by virtue of genetics, being exposed to a common virus, or succession of viruses, which occupy certain types of cells, thyroid, beta cells of the pancreas perhaps etc. The immune system of that susceptible individual recognizes the virus as foreign and attacks the virus where it resides.......within the beta cells of the pancreas, the thyroid, the heart etc. When the body destroys the virus,(such as Coxsackie B virus does) it also destroys the beta cells, and then we have the advent of Type I juvenile (autoimmune) diabetes. When the target organ is the thyroid, we may see Hashimoto's thyroiditis for example. Best wishes.
